"Petit a petit l'oiseau fait son nid."

("Little by little the bird makes his nest.": A wonderful anology to learning a second language. It takes time!)

PRESCHOOL

Those playing in the sandbox have heard me cry, "Creusez!" ("Dig!", sounds like:  Cruhzay) as they dig up sand to fill their trucks.  Others have been playing house and pretending to be cats.  I've called the cats to come (an unusual feat for cats!) saying, "Venez chats!" ("Come , cats", sounds like:  vuhnay shah) and "Tu as faim?"  ("Are you hungry?", sounds like:  Tyew ah fe(m).  And of course those climbing the dome often hear me say "Attention" ("Be careful", sounds like: ahtonsee-on) probably more often than they'd care to, as well as, "Il saute!" or "Elle saute!" ("He's / She's jumping", sounds like:  eel sote / el sote).

Any of these words or phrases you can use at home will help your child learn and retain the French they hear at school.

KINDERGARTEN

We are learning a silly poem in French as April was National Poetry Month (better late than never, right?).  The poem is below:

Un escargot dans mon chapeau         (un eskargo dan mon shapo :  A snail in my hat)

A spider in my basket)

They are creating their own pieces to go with the poem that they will hopefully share with you at home.  We are also playing a game  and acting out the poem to help with recall of each line.

GRADES 1 AND 2

We are now learning a poem in French as April was National Poetry Month.  I plan to introduce them to another poem as well.

A snail in my hat)

A spider in my basket)

Take a look at the creative bulletin board they made across from the 1/2 classrooms!

GRADES 3 AND 4

We learned a silly poem in French as April was National Poetry Month.  The poem is about various soups and which kind is for boys (onion soup), which kind is for girls (lentil soup), which kind is for friends (rice) and which kind is for me (pea).  They wrote their own poems based on this format about desserts. You can see them on the bulletin board by the French/Guidance room.

A few parents have asked about homework.   I do not assign h.w. every week.  When I do assign something it is given on Tuesday and is due on Friday.  The homework is written on the board in their class rooms.

Homework:  This week they have a test on the vocabulary from the soup poem.

C'est pour (say poor):  This is / That is  for

le garcon (luh garson):  the boy

la fille (la fee):  the girl

les amis (laze amee):  the friends

soupe a l'oignon (soop a lonyon):  onion soup

soupe aux pois (soop o pwa):  pea soup

GRADES 5 AND 6

We have been practicing a poem by Jacques Prevert (a well known French poet, 1900 - 1977), titled "Soyez Polis" (Be Polite).  It is about respecting the earth.  It is rather long so I will not rewrite it here.  Your child has a copy and can bring it home to share.

We have begun brainstorming phrases that would be useful on a trip to a French speaking city, such as Montreal, some of which are review.  The students will be making small phrase "cards" they can take with them to a French speaking city.  The 6th graders will be taking them on their class trip to Montreal.

A few parents have asked about homework.   I do not assign h.w. every week.  When I do assign something it is given on Tuesday and is due on Friday.  The homework is written on the board in their class rooms.

Homework:  This Friday they have a test on the vocabulary from the Jacques Prevert poem, "Soyez Polis"
