An Evening in Paris
Spend the evening relaxing in our cafe and sample French cuisine. Stroll through the Museum's colorful gardens. Listen to glorious French music and watch local artists at work. For all ages.
C'est Magnifique!
PRESCHOOL
The kids planted carrot seeds before heading up to recess and learned that carrot in French sounds almost the same as carrot in English (carotte, sounds like "kahrot"). Today we found 3 big frogs (trois grenouilles, sounds like trwa grunwee). One even spoke to us. Those playing in the sandbox have heard me cry, "Creusez!" ("Dig!", sounds like: Cruhzay) as they dig up sand to fill their trucks. Others have been playing house and pretending to be cats. I've called the cats to come (an unusual feat for cats!) saying, "Venez chats!" ("Come , cats", sounds like: vuhnay shah) and "Tu as faim?" ("Are you hungry?", sounds like: Tyew ah fe(m). And of course those climbing the dome often hear me say "Attention" ("Be careful", sounds like: ahtonsee-on) probably more often than they'd care to, as well as, "Il saute!" or "Elle saute!" ("He's / She's jumping", sounds like: eel sote / el sote).
Any of these words or phrases you can use at home will help your child learn and retain the French they hear at school.
KINDERGARTEN
Most children have finished their projects for the poem we learned. With the chicks in the classroom now we acted out a song about a little egg and the chick that hatches from the egg. The kids illustrated books they brought home with all of the words. Below are some words they have heard and practiced:
petit oeuf (puhteet uff); little egg
brun (brun): brown
bland (blan): white
voila (vwala): there is
ouvre les yeux (oovra laze yuh): open your eyes
GRADES 1 AND 2
The first and second graders decorated the table cloths for French Lunch last Tuesday and enjoyed being served by the older kids. They had quiche, grapes, strawberries, French cheeses and Poire Belle Helene ( pear, ice-cream and chocolate sauce).
We continue to practice introducing a friend or pet and talking about things we like and some of the things we do using their Arthur coloring book. The students are also reading their books in French! Ask them to read it to you when they bring it home.
GRADES 3 AND 4
The third and fourth graders helped serve during the French Lunch last Tuesday. We talked about what we could do differently next year and some great ideas were shared. We are currently doing a general review, including numbers, dates, weather, beginning conversations, and descriptions.
GRADES 5 AND 6
We have finished our phrase books that would be useful on a trip to a French speaking city, such as Montreal. We have played a "What if?" game using these useful expressions. The 6th graders returned from their way to Montreal, and hopefully had a chance to use some of the French they've learned. Mr. B's class made a cross-stick in French and Mrs. Vasseur's class wrote a Haiku in French for a special person. Your child can tell you who it's for.
